5A.M.er club...

Killer Guppy training facility

What my mornings have been looking like lately

it's been a while since my last post and I apologize. As you may have guessed I've been extremely busy but now with a lil down time I figure why not do a post?

So I have recently joined a Dragon Boat racing team called The Killer Guppies and have been devoting my weekend mornings to hard and rigorous training in Long Beach. My 1st race is August 1st so I need to get my butt in gear. I'm still learning but I feel like I'm getting the hang of things and really feel myself improving.

In order for me to prepare for these races I've started to work out with my team mates Reydon and Kat as well as my wife Carlene every morning at 5am four days a week. I figure what better way to lose weight and get in shape than competitive team sports? :)

I encourage people to try dragon boat at least once, you'll see what all the fuss is about.

I conquered the Kogi truck!!!!

The word on the tweets was that the infamous Kogi trucks ( dunno what the Kogi trucks are? watch the video above ) would be in Cerritos and so after watching Disney's Earth with our friends we headed to a parking lot to which the Kogi Trucks said they'd be at around 10pm. It was not even 10 and a line had already formed around this little plaza. One car parked and decided to bump their music real loud, some of the guys in the car even started to dance... oh to be young and oh so cool again lol...

Then the cops came, the music bumpers were quick to turn off their system and quit their dancing hahaha. Turns out more people showed up to this thing then what was expected and so a 2nd Kogi truck was called in. I enjoyed the novelty of waiting for these trucks and all in all we waited about 2 hrs, got me a short Rib burrito and LOVED it! I'll probably get it again but I'll go to Alibi Room to avoid the 2 hr wait.

This is actual video from last night when we went to get Kogi's!! Luckilly we were already in the pick-up line when the cop cut the line short and told a shit-load of people to go home...damn...

Birthday hike...

This is what I did for my 30th birthday, a 5 mile hike to the LA Observatory with some close friends. It was a beautiful morning hike that lasted 2 hrs, of course we had to watch out for rattle snakes and mountain lions but it sure was fun!

After our hike down we decided to eat at Milk where I enjoyed a cold soba noodle shrimp salad which was delish :) after which we headed home for a nap. Later that evening we had dinner at Steam City then chilled at Drich and Janets. This Sat is UFC fight night and pt.2 of my bday, who's down?

Joker One...

Joker One: A Marine Platoon's Story of Courage, Leadership, and Brotherhood Joker One: A Marine Platoon's Story of Courage, Leadership, and Brotherhood by Donovan Campbell

My review

Even though I am not done reading this book I feel I can give somewhat of an awesome review lol. Joker One by Donovan Campbell is a love story, a war story, a leadership guide, and a Marine recruitment narrative. It's a military memoir, and a little bit of a faith memoir. Joker One is an amazing true story, brilliantly told. I have never before read any memoir like it, and I urge you to pick up a copy, read it, and pass it along.

Donovan Campbell completed the ten-week Marine Corp Officer Candidate School ("ten weeks of uninterrupted screaming") as a college junior, after which he swore that he would "never, ever join the Marine Corp." He graduated from Princeton and promptly joined the Corps, looking for "a pursuit that would force me to assume responsibility for something greater than myself, something that would force me to give back, to serve others." This earnestness struck me as a little too heavily played--but not for long.

Campbell's compelling story begins in the middle of a firefight, just after a rocket attack on an abandoned hotel that Campbell and his men were using as an observation position. Surrounded by rubble, choking dust, and pieces of exploded rockets, with a friendly machine gun firing full-bore a few feet away, Lieutenant Campbell calls in his position, burns his fingers on the still-searing-hot hockey puck of a warhead, and eventually discovered that the enemy had failed to kill or wound a single Marine.

Thats just a taste, pick up a copy or wait till I finish reading mine and I'll pass it along if you ask nicely... ;)
